href="http://dogtrainingrules.com">Dog Training Rules

Building a bond with your dog the right away is all about mutual respect and being consistent. While obedience training and learning tricks at their young age is a great way to help form a bond with your dog, here’s a few ideas that are needed on a regular day to day basis throughout their lives.

Turn Energy Into Something Productive

It’s no secret that you should be getting your dog plenty of exercise. If they start to act up, chew your furniture or belongings, and display random energy bursts inside the house, that’s a clear sign that they haven’t had enough exercise. The first thing you should consider is a consistent walking routine every day. Don’t just let them out to go to the bathroom, actually take some time to walk them around the neighborhood. This will allow them to stimulate their senses and get some needed exercise. When you have some more time to spend, take them to a dog park or open field and start teaching them how to play fetch the right way. You can get some obedience training in while exercising their little hearts.

Dog Grooming

Dog grooming is important because it’s a time for you to give them lots of praise and it keeps them healthy. At first, they may feel a little hesitant to be restrained and sit for long grooming sessions. Start out with shorter brushing sessions to get them used to it. As they become more calm with you, you can move on to more of the challenging tasks like clipping their nails, giving them a bath, or using electric grooming clippers for those tougher coats. These types of activities will teach them to trust you (as long as you stay patient and calm) and will become a lot easier over time.

Being Calm And Consistent

It’s really easy to send mixed signals to our dogs which leaves them confused about what’s right or wrong. You should never yell at them in anger. You keeping calm will directly translate into them keeping calm, as well. Your focus also needs to be on rewarding certain behaviors so that they are more likely to repeat them. Setting strict rules inside the house and consistently enforcing them will send a clear message about what is expected of them. If they aren’t allowed on the couch, stick to that! If they can’t enter certain parts of the house, stick to that! The worst thing you can do is let them do it one day and then not the next. They really do prefer not to be confused and will be a lot happier knowing what’s right and what’s wrong.

Being consistent with all of these is often difficult, especially with the busy lives that many of us live. I recommend introducing one thing at a time into your daily routine. Don’t try to fit it in all at once, you’ll feel overwhelmed and you’re likely to give up a lot quicker, which could leave to an overall unhappy dog of yours.

Allison Kingsley is a loving home and pet owner who loves to share her knowledge. She also writes for <a

Depending on your dog’s breed, grooming could take anywhere from minutes to hours. Proper grooming may be easily accomplished at home or may require a professional groomer.

How do you know which category your hound fits in? When should you dish out money for a a pet salon or spa?

Generally, your indoor dog will stay cleaner than that of a dog that stays outside. However, because of the close living proximity to your indoor pup, you probably notice when he’s tracking in paw prints, smelling a little funky, or looking less than glamorous. Your indoor dog still goes outside, giving him plenty of opportunity to visit those muddy puddles that formed after a recent rain. If you’ve made the assumption that your indoor dog will require less grooming, think again. That’s likely to not be the case at all.

Lack of grooming can make for a hairy situation! Most breeds shed twice a year. However, there are low-shedding and non-shedding breeds like the Maltese and Poodle. Then you have breeds that shed moderately throughout the year such as the Dalmatian. Evaluate the time (or money) you are able or willing to spend working the hair brush when you select your dog breed. You may want that luxurious coated critter, but do you want to brush the Collie’s long hair every time he runs through your flowerbeds?

Brushing is just the tip of the iceberg. You’re not finished with a simple brushing. Consider the time you’ll need to bathe, dry and brush again. Grooming goes beyond the coat. Your dog’s nails, ears, eyes and teeth all need attention too!

A beagle and his floppy-eared cousins are all prone to picking up extra dirt and debris in their ears. Skipping proper ear cleaning will lead to ear infections more so than some short-eared breeds. Some non-shedding breeds will have excess ear hair that will need to be pulled out, not cut, during grooming.

While it is tempting to pass Fido a rawhide or Greenie for his oral health care needs, these should never substitute a good brushing. Additional oral cleanings at the vet are a great way to keep your dogs teeth in tip-top shape.

Since every dog needs grooming, where might your dog rank on the scale of grooming maintenance?

Long Think Coat (ex: Akitas)

Regular brushing. Daily brushing when shedding. Use a firm bristle brush.

Bathe once in the spring and again in the fall to avoid removing the protective oils from their coats.

Long, Silky Coats (ex: Spaniels)

Weekly bath and brushing

Coat trimming every two months

Wiry Coats (ex: Terriers)

Brush three times per week

Bathe every three months including stripping and hand plucking any dead hairs in the coat, which can take several hours

Cut excess hair around eyes

Non-Shedding, Curly (ex: Poodles)

Clippings and bathing every two months

Smooth Coats (ex: Boxer, Labrador)

Groom using a hand glove. They can have many other uses, including helping your pet get rid of the unwanted flees, teach it how to walk near you or showing it that barking is not good and so on. These days, many people use the dog collars as embellishment accessories for their pets. And you have to admit that some of them look really cute with colorful stylish leather dog collars that look like little necklaces for dogs.

Here are some examples of dog collars that might come in handy if you just got a dog and need to train it:

The Martingale Collar

This type of collar is quite different from the standard dog collars. It consists of two loops that can be of great help when training the dog how to walk. Moreover, this type of collar is suitable for all breeds and, in some cases, it is the only type recommended. For example, in the case of dogs with long necks and small heads, finding a collar can be difficult, because the head can slip easily through almost any type of buckle. Since the martingale collar has two loops, when the dog pulls, one of the loops tightens and the head cannot get out of the other loop.

Click on any collar to see more information and reviews

Lola and Foxy Martingale Dog Collar

Advantages of the martingale collar:

It uses a simple but very efficient system that doesn’t allow the dog to slip from the collar no matter how small its head is.

It is comfortable for the dog because it doesn’t have to be set very tight on the neck. It tightens only when the dog pulls.

It is usually quite cheap and all dog owners can afford it.

It is perfect for fashion addicts too, because it can be made out of almost any type of fabric. In the case of larger dogs, the second loop can be a chain.

Disadvantages:

This type of dog collar has almost no disadvantages at all. However, like in the case of all dog collars, it is not advisable to let the dog wear it 24/7, because it might be dangerous or cause irritations around the neck area.

The Leather Dog Collar

Most dog collars are made from leather. This fabric is considered to be a classic when it comes to dog fashion. There are many advantages to choosing it over other fabrics or materials like chain or textile:

Resistance. A leather dog collar is very resistant and wears well. If stored in regular conditions when the dog doesn’t wear it, it can last for several years.

Looks. If you are looking for the classic type of collar, the leather one is just perfect for you. Leather collars can also be printed or have semi precious stones embedded in the fabric.

Comfortable for the dog. The leather used for dog collars is usually softened with some special oils. This way the dog can find it very comfortable and irritations or excoriations from when the dog pulls can be completely avoided.

Click on any collar to see more information and reviews

The Bark Collars

Some dogs simply love to bark 24/7. If you think of it, it is completely natural because barking is in the nature of the dogs. But what can you do when the dog doesn’t listen to you when you tell it to stop barking? The bark of some dog breeds has so many decibels that it can bother not only you and your family members, but also the neighbors. This is even worse when you live in an apartment and the walls are paper-thin.

Fortunately, you can avoid all the troubles and invest in a bark collar that will teach your dog that it needs to bark only when he senses real danger. There are several types of bark collars that use different systems to train the dog. However, all of them should be used with caution, for limited period of times and under your supervision. In no time, your dog will learn how to behave and barking will no longer be a problem for you and your neighbors. Here are two of the most frequently used types:

a) The shock dog collars. These are quite controversial and not many owners agree to use them. These apply shock corrections to the dog whenever it barks loudly or for long periods of time. They are useful mostly for very energetic dogs that cannot be trained to stop barking otherwise. Specialists say that dogs can bark as a sign of gratitude for what you are doing for them. So, for example if you rescued a dog, expect it to bark excessively because it will want to protect you. This behavior can be corrected easily with the proper training and the right bark collar. The shock dog collars can be grouped into two categories. The ones from the first category apply the correction when the system gets an acoustic signal. This means that, when the dog barks, it receives a shock correction. These are the cheapest ones, but, unfortunately, they can give false corrections if the bark sound comes from another dog. The second category of shock collars for dogs reacts when it receives vibration signals. These are a little bit more expensive than the other ones, but will correct your dog’s behavior only when it is necessary.

b) The citronella collar. This is one of the most humane options for your dog. First of all, these dog collars do not use shocks to correct the behavior of the dog. The system they run on is very simple. Each time the dog barks, the collar receives a vibration signal that makes the citronella recipient spray in the direction of the nose and eyes. This is in no way dangerous for the dog, but it can be quite uncomfortable. This way, with time, the dog will learn to associate barking with the unpleasant citronella smell. The recipient needs to be placed close to the neck on the collar and its end needs to be directed towards the face of the dog. Whenever the dog barks its face is sprayed with the liquid. There are no false corrections in the case of the citronella collar, and even if there were, the consequences are in no way invasive or damaging for the health of the dog.

Click on any product to see more information & reviews

Premier GentleSpray Citronella Collar

For all these types of dog collars you will also need dog leashes. These can be of various types too. These leashes can be tied or clipped to the collar and can be a very useful accessory whenever you need to walk the dog. There are other types of dog leashes that can be tied directly around the neck of the pet, but these are not recommended because they might harm it.

In some cases, the leash consists of a chain. This is recommended when you have to deal with very powerful dogs that are not trained yet. For all the other dogs, the leash can be a type of rope, or it can be made of nylon, leather or many other types of fabrics. Whenever you choose a leash, take the resistance and the length into account, so that you can control the dog easily. Most leashes are designed to handle a certain number of pounds, so you should weigh your dog first. There are also retractable leashes that are comfortable for both pets and owners, but they are usually designed for smaller dogs. However, if you can control your large sized dog with one of these retractable leashes, it will be very happy.

Choosing from the multitude of dog collars and dog leashes available can be quite difficult, especially if you just bought your first puppy. Fortunately, with the many types available these days, you can choose something that can fully satisfy your needs. If you simply cannot decide which of the many dog collars is best for you, you can always ask your vet.

Dog Training Rules

Most veterinarians recommend dog owners to choose leather dog collars for their pets. The quality of the collar fabric is very important for the safety and well being of the dog. Moreover, if the collar is not of suitable quality, the dog might become agitated, and training it can become very difficult.

What are the qualities of a good leather dog collar?

Resistance. It is a known fact that leather is a very resistant fabric. This is the reason why it is used for shoes, bags and other items that can be exposed to mechanical factors, but also the rough weather conditions. Your dog will need something that is resistant enough, especially, if it is a medium or big-sized breed. In the training period, the dog is not yet used to obey commands or to walk by your side. This means he will have the tendency to pull off, which is why the collar needs to be resistant.

Softness. Textile fabrics are neither resistant nor soft. These can harm the skin of the dog and cause excoriations and irritations. Since the skin on the neck is very sensitive, things can get even worse. In some cases bleedings and blisters have been reported. With the leather dog collars, these problems can be avoided. The leather fabric used for the dog collar is usually treated with special oily substances that soften it, without affecting its resistance.

Great looking. All dog owners want good quality accessories for their pets. If they look great, things are even better. Leather dog collars can come in many shapes and colors that wear well over time. These can also be adorned with things like stones. Some eccentric dog owners choose to adorn the collar with precious stones and precious metals.

Click on any collar to see more information and reviews

Since leather is used widely for dog collars, there are several types to suit all needs. Here are three of the most popular ones:

The rolled leather collar. This is the alternative for the flat leather collar and it is used mostly for long haired dog breeds. Those who have dogs with long hair know that it has the tendency to tangle all the time if it is not groomed properly. One of the reasons why it tangles in the neck area is because the collar is inappropriate. With a rolled leather collar, this does not happen, even if the dog tries to take the collar off or pulls hard.

The spiked leather collar. This type of dog collar is preferred mostly by the owners of large size dogs. Besides the fact that it looks great on them and makes them seem even more ferocious, they have other purposes too. Leather dog collars with big spikes have been used in the past too, but as a method of protection for the guard dogs. These were often attacked by other animals like wolves, and the spikes kept the enemies away. Nowadays, they are mostly used for design and the spikes are much smaller. However, they can offer the pet protection whenever needed.

The studded leather collar. These are similar to the spiked leather collars, but the spikes are replaced by dull points or studs made out of metal. Unlike the spiked ones, these do not offer the same protection to the neck area of the pet. These leather dog collars are mostly used for fashion reasons and are completely safe for the pets.

Click on any collar to see more information and reviews

Dog Training Rules

These days, there are many bark collars available on the market. This is a positive thing, because now you can control your dog’s barking easily. On the other hand, with so many options, how can you decide which is the best one?

The first step should always be finding out why your dog barks in the first place. Here are three of the most frequent reasons why dogs bark:

When they sense danger. This is the moment when dog barking control should not be applied. Applying a correction to the dog when it senses danger can mislead it into believing that it has done something wrong. On occasions when its barks might actually be very helpful, it might not give you any signal at all. So, take great care when you use stop dog barking methods.

When they are happy. Happy dogs might express their feelings by barking. It is OK if this is done at appropriate hours and preferably in an open space where neighbors cannot be disturbed. However, when the dog barks late at night in an apartment it almost doesn’t matter if it is happy barking. Dogs need to learn from the youngest ages what they are allowed to do and what not. In this case, bark collars are the right solution, if they do not listen to your verbal commands.

To thank you for what you’ve done for it. This is specific to shelter rescued animals, but not only. Since dogs cannot speak, the only way they can communicate their affection and feelings is by barking. The no bark collars are able to put an end to this irritating habit, but think if you really want to stop it. Of course, when the dog doesn’t listen to any verbal command, it is time to choose other methods, like the anti bark collars.

The next step should be analyzing your needs and the needs of the dog. Here are some variables to take into account:

a) Consider the size of the dog. This is one of the most important things you need to take into account before you purchase a dog bark collar. Bark collars for small dogs are quite different from the ones for big dogs, even if they work on the same principles. First of all, the correction is adapted to the size, so that the dog doesn’t suffer unnecessary discomfort. Moreover, the length and thickness of the collar needs to be suitable for the size of the dog.

b) Consider the age of the dog. Pet training experts say that puppies should not be trained using bark collars for dogs that work with intense shocks, because they can be easily trained using other, less traumatizing, methods for their age.

c) Take into account the physical characteristics. Dog breeds have very different characteristics, especially when it comes to the shape of the neck and head. For example, in the case of the dogs with long necks and small heads, the dog bark collar needs to be tight enough to sense the vibrations. Moreover, when they see it is uncomfortable, the dogs might try to take the collar off, which can be very easy if it is loose and the head is small.

d) Start with a less painful dog barking control system and increase the correction intensity if it doesn’t work. There are some types of bark collars that have a gradual intensity system. For example, if, after the first correction that uses ultrasounds, the dog continues to bark, the next correction will be a short shock one. If this doesn’t work either, the next correction will increase in intensity. This can go on up to 7 or more levels, depending on the type of anti bark collars. This is one of the most recommended bark collars, because of the efficiency and because you will only pay for one collar that does on its own what other several bark control collars do separately.

The no bark collars are most of the times extremely useful and can help you train your dog into obeying your commands. However, if this doesn’t work, you should see a training expert for more advice. It is very possible that you are not using the right bark collars and this is why your dog’s behavior is not corrected yet.

<a

Dogs need to be trained to obey what the owners tell them for their own good. Bad habits like barking or running away from the owner, especially when called, can be corrected with the help of shock collars.

Controversy

Some pet owners say that these types of dog shock collars are inhumane and can harm the pet. What they do not understand is the fact that the shock is extremely mild, just enough to draw the attention of the pet and help it associate the correction with the bad habit. These collars have been used for many years in training dogs and seem to be very efficient and work fast. In fact, most dogs that take part in competitions have been trained with the help of shock collars for dogs.

When Should You Use Shock Collars for Dogs?

Age. There is no exact age when a shock collar is recommended. Most pet experts say that it should be used when the dog starts its training. For most breeds, this period is around six months of age. However, if you are afraid that your puppy is too young, you should ask your vet when it should start its training.

Behavior. Most dog shock collars are used on dogs that have a very bad temper. For example the anti-bark dog shock collar can be used for dogs that seem to bark all the times. Some dogs do not obey the verbal commands and need to have their attention drawn in another way. This type of collar can be a great choice.

Types of Shock Collars for Dogs:

Depending on the system that makes the shock correction, there are two types of collars designed for barking: the ones that are set off by the sound and the ones that are set off by the vibration. Most people believe that the first category is not very useful, because it may cause false corrections, but the truth is that it can be used safely for indoor dogs. This means that the dog is in a place where there are no other dogs that can bark or other powerful sounds that can activate the shock collar. The second category includes the shock collars for dogs that are activated by vibrations. These are considered to be safer than the previous ones, and the corrections are activated only when the system senses the vibrations made by the bark. These are suitable for both indoor and outdoor dogs, or when there are more dogs in the same place. This is because there are no false corrections at all.

Instant shock collars for dogs or gradual ones. The difference between the two is obvious, and it is the temperament of the dog that should be decisive when making the choice. Dogs that are already mature and that couldn’t be educated during the training programs might require an instant shock collar. Taking them gradually might not be very efficient, as some dog breeds can be very stubborn. On the other hand, if this is the first time you are trying to train the dog not to bark or to obey your commands, you might want to consider the gradual shock collars. These start by drawing the attention of the dog with a powerful sound only it can sense, and continue with a small intensity shock. After the cycle is finished and the dog starts to bark again for example, the program restarts with the sound.

Many people think that shock collars can do wonders with their dogs. Well, the truth is that they can, but not on their own. If you choose one of these collars for your dog, you need to be there to show it what it is doing wrong. If it doesn’t listen to you and keeps running away from you, you need to make it understand that this is why the collar releases the electric shock. In the cases when the collars are used to correct barking habits, the owner should be there too, even if the dog can learn on its own to associate the correction with the bad habit.

To make everything run as smoothly as possible, it is recommended to never interfere with the corrections of the shock collars for dogs, even though you might feel pity for your pet.

Dog Training Rules

All dog owners know that choosing the right dog leashes for their pet is as important as choosing the right dog collar. Your canine friend needs to feel comfortable when it takes a walk in the park or when it goes for a run while you jog. Most pet training experts say that a dog should have several dog collars and leashes for all the situations. If you cannot afford to purchase more than one, you need to take all the variables into consideration, including the size of the dog, the age, if it is already trained or not, the temperament and whether it has behavior issues.

To make your choice easier, here are the most frequently used types of dog leashes:

The standard, leather dog leashes. These are mostly used for all dog breeds, no matter the size. They are usually known as standard leashes because they are the simplest ones and the size cannot usually be adjusted. Standard leashes can also be made of chain if the dog has the bad habit of chewing it, but leather is preferred, because it is easy to handle and very resistant to traction. However, for very heavy dogs, the chain is better, but the end that the owner holds must also be made of leather. The length usually varies between 4 and 8 feet. Contrary to what some might believe, large size breeds can be handled better with a short leash rather than with longish ones especially, if they have a bad temper.

The adjustable leashes. These are mostly used when training the dog because of the several loops they have. This way, the length can be adjusted when needed. The fabric is usually a textile one, but leather can also be used.

The retractable leashes. These dog leashes are preferred by many pet owners because they can offer their dog enough freedom to run or to play while the owner can still control it. These leashes can be included in the category of long dog leashes, because the cord can be up to 26 feet long. Letting the dog off leash can be an alternative, but, in very crowded areas, this can be dangerous for the canine friend. Its attention can be drawn by something on the other side of the street and the dog might cross it in a hurry, disregarding the fact that cars can hit it. You definitely do not want this to happen, which is why the retractable leashes can be a great choice. In some areas dogs are not even allowed leash-free and the fines can be quite high.

If the dog collar is a widely popular choice for most dogs, in some situations the dog harness can be a better solution. The dog harness is recommended for puppies that are not yet trained to take walks and to obey commands. These can be used with any type of dog leashes. Puppies and youngish dogs are not used to wearing collars when they go for walks. This is why they have the tendency to pull all the times and can harm themselves, or even choke sometimes. To avoid all these troubles, a dog harness needs to be used at least in the beginning.

Click on any leash to see more information and reviews

Reflective Dog Lead

Most people think that large sized dogs are the most agitated ones, but pet experts say that the small sized dogs are the energetic ones. This is why most owners of “mini dogs” prefer the harness instead of the collar. It is very comfortable for the pet, and the owner can control it easily without harming it. Harnesses can be made out of various fabrics, but, in this case, leather is also preferred. This has to be very soft, because it gets in contact directly with the skin in some parts of the body. For better protection, the leather is coated with very soft fabrics.

If you care about your canine friend, you need to choose the best dog leashes and collars; so, consider your dog’s characteristics, keep in mind all the above and start your search!

<a

Dogs have delicate digestive systems, and those boring kibble pieces he scarfs down every day are actually specifically formulated for his health and happiness. Not so with table scraps, and definitely not so with the following ten foods, which dog vets advise you should keep away from your pup at all costs.
Alcohol is harmful to humans and is even worse for dogs. Beer, wine, and liquor will affect a dog far more powerfully than they will a human, especially if you’re dealing with a smaller pooch. Remember the first time you got drunk? Don’t force this experience on your dog.

Caffeinated beverages such as soda, coffee, and tea are similarly bad for your dog, as the stimulant damages the liver and nervous system. So keep those pick-me-ups away from your pup!

The classic dangerous dog food, chocolate is just as bad as the rumors say. Chocolate, especially baking chocolate, will have a toxic effect on your dog and will require a visit to the dog veterinarian if accidentally consumed.
<div

They cause kidney failure and will make your dog sick as, well, a dog.

Candy and gum should be avoided at all costs, as these items usually contain Xylitol, a sweetener. Xylitol damages the liver and will decrease your dog’s blood sugar levels. Avoid it.

Milk and other dairy products will give your dog a bad upset stomach, causing diarrhea and general unhappiness. Keep the ice cream to yourself; your dog will thank you.

Despite what cartoons may tell you, bones should never be given to a dog. They present huge choking hazards, and can often splinter and harm your pup’s digestive system. Stick with the chew toys.

Fruit is also bad for your dog, as the seeds can create digestive obstructions that may require a dog vet to sort out. Larger seeds, such as those found in peaches, can also pose a choking hazard.

Onions and garlic have a far more dangerous effect on a dog than just bad breath. Both cause anemia, a decrease in red blood cells, which will hurt your dog all over, and can often require a dog veterinarian’s attention. Keep these foods to yourself.

Finally, raw meat should never be fed to your dog, no matter how appetizing it may look. Raw meat can contain harmful bacteria that leads to food poisoning and all the problems that come with that.

Other harmful foods: macadamia nuts, salt, avocado, animal fat, human medicine. All things considered, it’s probably best to stick with your dog’s usual culinary routine, but if you must treat him to something special, check with your dog veterinarian before you do. It could save a lot of health and hassle down the line.

Django Gold is a writer with Wet Nose Guide, a nationwide dog care directory for dog owners on the go. With the changing of the seasons, comes cooler weather and depending on where you live extreme temperature changes make it necessary to provide extra protection for your dearly loved outdoor dogs. Just as you winterize your home, cars and sprinkler systems, Fido also needs some winterizing to ensure he stays happy and healthy during the fall and winter seasons.

Inside is Safest

If you have a dog that typically live outdoors, it is safest to allow him to stay inside when temperatures turn frigid, dropping to 30 degrees Fahrenheit with or without wind-chill. With extreme temperatures your dog can easily get frostbite on sensitive areas like his ears, nose and feet. Remember, by keeping your dog inside, he will receive less exercise and will in turn need to be fed less in order to keep a healthy weight. If you do let your dog outside for some exercise, you may want to dress him in some warm clothing and even doggy shoes. If you have any chemicals on your sidewalk or pavement to help melt snow and ice it can really irritate your pups’ paws, so boots can help, but either way be sure to wipe his feet to remove any unwanted chemicals once he is back inside. If your dog is not used to sleeping indoors, you may experience that he barks more at night due to the creeks and small noises in your house that he isn’t used to – to help alleviate this, you may want to make some use of a dog bark collar.

Create Shelter

If your dog must stay outside you need to create a warm shelter to protect him from the extreme elements he will endure. Ensure he has a dog house that is elevated from the cold ground with a doggy door to help minimize cool drafts. Fill your dog’s house with lots of warm bedding to cuddle up with or even consider letting him sleep in a the garage or covered patio with warm bedding. Being outside will take more energy to stay warm, so you will need to offer your dog more food during the winter months, and check his water often to make sure it hasn’t frozen over due to the cooler temperatures. If you aren’t already, a good tip is to use <a

Again, be careful about what chemicals you put outside, so you don’t irritate your dog’s paws and you may want to give him an extra layer of warmth with a doggy sweater.

General Safety Measures

Whether your dog will be staying inside or outside, there are some key tips to think about during the winter months. Do not let your dog stay in the car during winter months – the car can become very cold and your dog could actually freeze to death. On the other side, you will need to check under your car as well before starting and backing out. If you dog has access they may crawl under the car near the hood to take part in the warmth of the engine while it’s cooling down. Please make sure you look under your car so you don’t hurt your dog if this has happened. While going on walks, keep your dogs on a leash and make sure their <a

Their sense of smell can become affected with snow and they can easily lose their way and become lost.

There is a lot to consider in keeping your dog safe and warm during the winter, but it’s always better to plan for the worst case scenario to make sure your dog stays happy and healthy. If you are ever concerned that something may be wrong with your dog, it’s best to visit your veterinary to verify everything is okay.

Dr. Susan Wright is a practicing veterinarian with over 10 years experience.
